One year into President Donald Trump’s second term, the American Jewish community is reeling — just like the rest of the country.
For generations now, presidents have at least paid lip service to steadying the ship of state. Trump has taken an axe to the mast.
And as he has destabilized the United States since being sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2025, he has destabilized American Jews.
To mark the end of Trump’s first year back in office, I looked at how a series of his policies and pronouncements have exaggerated already-deep divides in the Jewish community — and bewildered his supporters and detractors alike.

(JEWISH GROUP) Nick Fuentes says his problem with Trump 'is that he is not Hitler'
In the fall, a video of Nick Fuentes criticizing Donald Trump drew the praise of progressive ex-Congressman Jamaal Bowman.
“Finally getting it Nick,” Bowman commented, apparently recognizing some common ground between himself on the left and Fuentes, on the far right, who said in the video that Trump was “better than the Democrats for Israel, for the oil and gas industry, for Silicon Valley, for Wall Street,” but said he wasn’t “better for us.”
Now, Fuentes says there is actually no common ground between him and those on the left.
“My problem with Trump isn’t that he’s Hitler — my problem with Trump is that he is not Hitler,” Fuentes said during his streaming show on Tuesday, which focused mostly on the potential for an American attack on Iran.

(JEWISH GROUP) Wendell (NC) community shaken by repeated hate speech vandalism incidents in one week
Wendell residents on Thursday said they’re concerned after people spray-painted a building with hate speech twice in the same week.
The first spray painting was discovered on Monday at a building on North Hollybrook Road. Some of the messaging showed a Star of David crossed out on the side of the building.
Authorities in Wendell said the graffiti was painted over less than 24 hours after it appeared.

Less than four days later, more graffiti appeared, with expletives targeting President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Israel and Charlie Kirk. It also featured even more antisemitic messages targeting Israel and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a bipartisan pro-Israel political action committee advocating for stronger relations between the United States and Israel.

Mississippi fire suspect called the temple a 'synagogue of Satan'

A man who confessed to setting fire to a historic Mississippi temple on Saturday told law enforcement it was the “synagogue of Satan.”
Stephen Spencer Pittman was charged Monday with damaging or destroying a building by means of fire or an explosive. Security camera footage from Beth Israel Congregation — the only synagogue in Jackson, the state capital — showed a hooded figure pouring accelerant inside the building’s library before lighting a fire.
The fire ripped through Beth Israel shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, destroying the library, two Torahs, and offices, leaving parts of the surrounding building blackened and charred. The main sanctuary and five Torah scrolls inside sustained smoke damage. The building also houses the offices of the Institute of Southern Jewish Life.
Pittman was arrested Saturday evening, reportedly with severe burns. He confessed to his father, who contacted the FBI, according to an affidavit obtained by the Forward.

(JEWISH GROUP) Fire destroys Jackson, Mississippi's only synagogue, suspect arrested
A fire tore through Beth Israel, the only synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday, leaving the congregation forced to rebuild from the ashes — again.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the fire, which remains under investigation, but it comes amid a wave of antisemitic attacks in recent years.
The fire occurred around 3 a.m., according to Jackson Mayor John Horhn. “The Jackson Fire Department responded quickly, contained the blaze and extinguished the fire,” Horhn said.
This isn’t the first time the synagogue has burned. On September 18, 1967, Beth Israel’s temple was bombed by local Ku Klux Klan members, in part because of the congregation’s work in the civil rights movement, according to the synagogue’s website.

Pardoned Jan. 6 protester Jake Lang staged an antisemitic demonstration on Sunday outside of the headquarters of the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC where he threw chocolate coins and gave a Nazi salute.
As he stood before a banner reading “Make Jerusalem Christian Again,” Lang made a series of threats against AIPAC-funded politicians and peddled a slew of antisemitic tropes, including the Great Replacement Theory, which holds that Jews are orchestrating mass immigration.
“White people in America, you will be replaced, and your children will be Black Muslims if you don’t stand up now,” said Lang, according to a video of the protest posted on X by journalist Ford Fischer. “AIPAC is one of the main components to the people at the head of Hollywood that are brainwashing your children to vote Democrat, to take your guns and to take your freedom. It’s time we fight back.”

(JEWISH GROUP) Spanish Jews warn map of local Jewish and 'Zionist' businesses will lead to violence
An online map identifying Jewish and Israeli-linked businesses in Catalonia has drawn sharp criticism from Spain’s Jewish community, who say it echoes antisemitic practices from Europe’s darkest chapters.
The project, called “Barcelonaz,” appeared this week on the French-hosted mapping platform GoGoCart, claiming to be “a collaborative map of the Zionist economy in Barcelona.”
Run by an anonymous group describing itself as “journalists, professors and students,” the interactive map lists more than 150 businesses, schools and organizations that it labels as “Zionist.” Its objective, it says, is to “understand how Zionism operates” in Catalonia and to call out and denounce what it describes as the impact of related investments in the region.
The map is public, collaborative and regularly updated, it says, encouraging users to donate and to submit additional locations that meet criteria defined by the site’s creators.

4 more victims of Bondi Hanukkah attack laid to rest, including couple that tackled terrorist
Four people killed in the antisemitic terror attack in Sydney on Sunday were laid to rest Friday, including a couple who were shot dead after tackling one of the two terrorists who killed 15 people and wounded dozens at the Hanukkah candle-lighting event on Bondi Beach.
Boris and Sofia Gurman were buried at the Chevra Kadisha in Woollahra, and Edith Brutman and Boris Tetleroyd were buried at the Rookwood Cemetery in Lidcombe, according to local media.
Senior Sydney Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, whose son-in-law Rabbi Eli Schlanger was also killed in the terror attack, led all four funerals on Friday.
“Yesterday we buried a 10-year-old girl; it’s been years since I’ve seen two coffins next to each other,” said Ulman at the Gurmans’ funeral.
